Welcome to the Globe Bookgroup blog! Here, members of the group can post messages about past and present books, and catch up with other members. The Globe Bookgroup meets around every 4-5 weeks on a Thursday night in The Globe pub, Baker Street. We get very excited about choosing and voting for our books. We don't do organised discussions or heavy hardbacks.

October bookgroup

Another small but beautiful turn-out...yay, we are are the fab faithful four...

We all LOVED Beyond the Great Indoors, and found it amusing, sweet, real, interesting and intriguing.

Nicky's shortlist was:

1. Stuart: A Life Backwards by Alexander Masters
2. How I Live Now by Meg Rosen
3. Conjurer's Bird by Martin Davies
4. Talking it Over by Julian Barnes
5. On Beauty by Zadie Smith

There was an exciting 2-round vote, where each one of us voted for a different book. 2 books were then randomly picked out of a cutlery holder and we then voted again - and the winner was...

Talking it Over by Julian Barnes

Have fun reading it....

Zadie Smith - White Teeth

I am approaching the last part of White Teeth and have been enjoying it. I think Zadie has alot of good sense and writes well. Its quite an achievement at such a young age. She is brave in taking on a third person narrative - which demands an authoritative outlook. The characters are interesting and well drawn. She may not be Hardy or Steinbeck or Waugh or Tolstoy but she shows great promise. The narrator of White Teeth at one point though lists those who exude sex appeal. The young Brando I could definitely agree with but Madonna - no never - she is rather tacky and has no real sense of style.
